This summer seems to be one of complete exploration for me. I’ve tried different mediums, different styles and different subject matter, and it’s really been the creative outlet I’ve needed during this crazy season of life.
I traded my usual delicate florals for western scenes and blocky shapes pieced together like the memories they’re recollecting.
These paintings are reminders of blissful summer escapes - like days where we took to the mountains to escape the desert heat, built campfires and sat around chatting with friends for hours. While these are specific memories of my summer, I hope these cozy feelings are familiar to you, and that you’re able to cast your own cherished stories on each piece.
A little about the process:
This collection came together much different than most. I usually take brush to canvas with little planning, but that wasn’t the case with these at all. In fact, I created each piece digitally before ever even thinking about pulling out my paints because there was a lot of planning that went into each one.
For starters, many of these paintings are quite literally pieced together. I’ve documented many of my favorite days by taking photographs, but to create the perfect composition, I had to combine small pieces of many different images.
From there, I started a digital drawing that allowed me to experiment with which pieces and parts to abstract, easily change out colors, and play around with the palette. That was a HUGE part of this process for me because in many of my other paintings, I paint from what I see in real life. The stylization in these pieces, though, allowed me to play around a lot with color and carefully choose each palette. So much fun!

I’ve had so much fun putting this collection together, and I can’t wait to officially share them with you so soon. If you’ve enjoyed this series or want to share a fun summer memory, I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
What an interesting method of combining digital and traditional painting! These are stunning and I loved reading about the process of the work coming together.
