We’ve lived in El Paso, TX for over 2 years now. There’s dry heat, beautiful sunsets and a completely different culture & landscape than I grew up with. We’ve spent weekends hiking among arid desert plants, going to rodeos and camping in sweet mountain towns just out of the city. It’s been a fun adventure, and, aside from a few landscape paintings, it’s one I’ve almost completely ignored in my creative practice. This month, I decided to change that.
I’ve been itching to add more story to my work. So I decided why not record my own story - my own memories. And that’s how this body of work has developed. Right now it looks mostly western with scenes portraying men in the woods adorning cowboy hats, working alongside their furry companions, building campfires, etc. because that’s what my summer has looked like. But, I expect this to continue evolving as the seasons change, and I continue to find other beautiful moments to record on canvas.
I’ve had a lot of fun abstracting these scenes a bit and using big blocks of color to draw focus to a particular part of the piece - mainly the figures within them. While these scenes have a human element, I’m trying to keep the subjects fairly ambiguous. These works are inspired by my memories, but I hope that you’re able attach your own stories to them. After all, that’s part of the beauty of art right?
I’m working hard to add a few more pieces to this August collection, and I’ll be sending out a collection preview later this week! I can’t wait to share them all with you.
